Always check the settings menu first

Always check the settings menu first

I've got into the habit of opening the settings before I even start playing a new game. It sounds fussy, but it's saved me from a lot of early frustration, and it often reveals how much thought a developer put in.

The first thing I look for is a graphics or effects toggle. Lowering it almost always improves battery life and frame rate, and on casual games you barely notice the visual difference. Next is audio, because looping music gets grating fast.

Control settings come after that. Sensitivity sliders, layout options, and the choice between tilt and buttons can completely change a game's feel. Many people quit a game thinking it plays badly when really they just never touched the defaults.

Accessibility options are worth a look too, even if you don't think you need them. Larger text, colourblind modes, and the ability to slow things down make plenty of games more comfortable for everyone. A rich settings menu is usually a good sign.
